HOMESTEAD NATIONAL MONUMENT OF AMERICA
Palmer-Epard Cabin Relocated

[Printer-friendly text version]

Amidst the scaffolding and tools, the Palmer-Epard cabin stands nearly completed on its new location near the monument’s Heritage Center. NPS photo by Jessica Fleming.

The National Park Service’s Historic Preservation Training Center has orchestrated the dismantling and relocation of the Palmer-Epard cabin, a move that stemmed from a proviso in the parks general management plan, developed in 1999.

Relocating the cabin from behind the monument’s Education Center to near the Heritage Center made it possible for the cabin to be repaired and placed in an area just off of Daniel Freeman’s homestead and within a more historically accurate landscape.

Homestead National Monument of America, the Midwest Regional Office, the Nebraska State Historical Preservation Office and the National Park Service Historic Preservation Society of Frederick, Maryland, all participated in this cabin relocation project.
