In a continued effort to provide its users with as much useful information as possible, the National Park Service Budget Office brings you two different perspectives on sites as they were authorized into the Service. With the exception of sites authorized in the 1800's, the timelines are sectioned by decades. Entries listed in red indicate passing of significant legislation.

In Order of Date Authorized Under the Department of the Interior
The more comprehensive of the two timelines, this timeline depicts sites as they were authorized under the Department of the Interior. Although many sites are authorized directly into the Service, many sites originally were authorized under other departments or bureaus; at some point, they were authorized for transfer to the NPS. Information such as dates authorized, from whom transferred, and whether the site was later abolished or incorporated. In addition, this timeline provides statistical data as sites enter or leave the service such as: number of sites authorized that decade; number of sites deauthorized, incorporated, or transferred; and total number of sites currently authorized under the NPS (at the end of that specific decade). Order of Date - As Authorized by Congress
This timeline depicts sites as they were initially authorized by Congress; the date authorized is pertainent to when the site was first authorized by Congress regardless of whether the site was originally authorized under the NPS.
