The main attractions for most visitors include the dramatic displays in the Visitor Center showcasing ancient mammals that once roamed the American Plains, and the unique Cook Collection of American Indian artifacts. For those with more time, short hikes from one to three miles allow the opportunity to explore the natural history of the Niobrara River Valley and its current and past wildlife.

Note: Most Cook Collection items are not currently on exhibit as we are undergoing renovations in the James H. Cook Gallery(planned October, November 2009).  However the fossil displays and movie in the visitor center as well as the two trails are available. 

 

 
This in situ example of the Stenomylus camel can be seen in the visitor center at Agate Fossil Beds.  

Did You Know?
A very small camel, the Stenomylus camel, was found near the Agate Fossil Hills. This camel was about two feet tall at maturity. Although the quarry is not accessible, displays about this fragile-looking animal are available in the visitor center.
